Speakng as a falconer myself, with over 40 years of experience working with owls, this is a threat display, where the owl is attempting to appear larger than it actually is, just like a human squaring their shoulders as a threat display. They do this whe nervous, or when sensing a threat to themselves or their nest/chicks. Someone was getting a touch too close for this owl's comfort :-) I would have tagged this image, but all my tags are being removed by a moderator, who tells me to either accept their removal or stop using this site, so I'll just add my "tags" in the comment section and inform people as I go😃
