The cenotaph commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was originally erected in memory of the fallen soldiers from the district who served in World War One, and lists the names of those who lost their lives in the conflict.
It was rededicated on the 26th of October 2007 to commemorate all personnel in all conflicts.
The gun, which was originally part of the war memorial enclosure, has been moved to an adjacent position and is now a separate memorial.
On the 11th November 2018, a new plaque was added containing the names of 762 men from the Lithgow district who served in World War One.
